70 years being basketball champions; know them

Orizaba, Ver.- Family, friends and followers ask the local government, through social networks, to open a museum dedicated to the Carta Blanca women’s basketball team and there to capture in photographs, videos and written testimonies the history of the warriors of Orizaba who are still active today, as well as who was their sports promoter, the late former mayor Humberto Gutiérrez Zamora.

Dr. Marco Antonio Rodríguez Vivas, brother of Aracely, one of the members of that team, on his personal Facebook recalls that the legendary professor Humberto Gutiérrez Zamora was the great patron and architect of the great and unforgettable Carta Blanca women’s basketball team.

This was founded in Orizaba in 1952 and re-emerged in 1959, since then it has competed uninterruptedly, with five of the first players still active and adding 6 decades, or even more, of the basket.

He relates that the athletes Adela Ochoa, María Antonia “Toña” Villegas, Irma Arey, Araceli Rodríguez and Guadalupe “Lupita” Morales, began shooting at school age, were recruited by the late professor Humberto Gutiérrez Zamora.

He adds that the Carta Blanca team caused admiration among Orizabeños, by defeating one of the most powerful teams of that time in the country, the Adelitas de Chihuahua, as well as many teams that came and that the Orizabeño team visited throughout the country, winning the affection of the people.

“They visited, for example, Parral Chihuahua and Allende, the borders of Paso, Texas; Guatemala, Nicaragua, as well as other events that were not re-recorded in our city, but that remain in the collective memory of those of us who were actors in the stands, between cheers, cheers, anguish, and applause, “he recalls.

Some of those great players who put the name of Orizaba very high, through that legend of the women’s team Carta Blanca, are still valid and active today. The ball of this great sport is held close to their hands. They resist time, oblivion and memory, because they continue to play; they may be between 73 and 80 years old.

In his request, Dr. Rodríguez Vivas abounds: “Since we boast of having museums in our magical town, through the municipal authorities, and national and state sports institutions, that grant a space of importance to the protagonists who made it possible this beautiful page in the history of our city ”.

In it, new generations can be made aware of how the Carta Blanca team was formed, and put the names of Professor Humberto Gutiérrez Zamora, Hada Gutiérrez Zamora Cruz and the great players that make it up, in the place they deserve.

They recently received the award that classifies them as distinguished citizens for their contribution in the sports area for the benefit of the population and the city.
