Watch the day-night tour match between Australia A and India on Fox Cricket starting Friday.
Mark Waugh assisted Cameron Green on his test debut at the Adelaide Oval, naming him in his favorite XI ahead of Matthew Wade.
The great Australian also nominated Marcus Harris and Will Pucovski as his first couple of choice, with under-fire incumbent Joe Burns as the reserve opener in case Pucovski fails to recover from a concussion for next week’s first test.
Green scored an unbeaten 125 and took 2-12 for Australia A against the Indians earlier this week to seriously bolster his case for a baggy green and Waugh says there is no way he can be left out now.

Green gives 114 good reasons

“I think Green is a bit of a starter,” Waugh said on Fox Cricket. “You have to play it. He looks so good and also offers something with the ball.
“It’s tough for Matthew Wade, but at the end of the day, if the players don’t nail their place with consistent runsscoring or wickets, the door is left open and I think Wade and Burns both did that to some extent. ”
Wade averaged 29.75 in Australia’s most recent series of tests against New Zealand but has been in impressive form this summer, averaging 69.67 in the Sheffield Shield and 48.33 in the T20 against India.
Burns has struggled by now. With his scores of 4 and 0 in the Tour match against India, his top-notch average rose to 8.71 that summer. Waugh backed Burns to take the new ball alongside Harris in the event Pucovski is disfellowshipped, but said the Queenslander would be the one to make way if the Victorian was deemed fit to play.

“Harris did well enough, especially against India a few years ago. I thought he fought really well.
“He’s got a couple of runs (Sheffield Shield). He didn’t convert at the friendly game level, but I like him as a player. “
The South Paw made 35 and 25 * in the Tour Match at Drummoyne Oval and an average of 118.33 in the Sheffield Shield before the mid-season break.

Co-commentator Adam Gilchrist backed Harris to open the eyelash in case Pucovski was disfellowshipped, but tossed his weight behind Burns to keep his place and urged the selectors to pick him up for this week’s tour match at the Sydney Cricket Ground Imprison the Adelaide Oval Test.
“If you alleviate those concerns before the game, it might just release the handbrake,” said Gilchrist. “You know how much this is a psychological game. I don’t think it’s really a skill matter for these guys at this level.
“That could be the way to unlock him and really get him into this Adelaide friendly, with a few runs under his belt or just to be comfortable with the team.”
