“You can’t understand football without fans in the stands”

The president of Barakaldo has proposed to paralyze the league in Second B after the decision of the Basque Government to prohibit the presence of spectators at matches. “The clubs belong to the members and their interests must be defended,” he warns. In the note that the club sent on Thursday, it assured that “if they force us to continue competing, we would be at serious risk of disappearance.” Yesterday he qualified that phrase: «We express ourselves badly. The situation in Barakaldo is not so delicate. “Perhaps we are one of the clubs with the least financial risk due to this decision,” he adds, although he believes that there are other entities that are going to have a very bad time.

What have been the reasons that have led you to launch this proposal?

– I would not understand that a theater company was asked to act and paid its actors to do their role behind closed doors. Here the same, we do not understand football without its fans. The clubs belong to the members and their interests must be defended. If it were solely for financial damage, we still would not have made this request. We do it for both.

But economically, the lack of public will affect the box.

– Evidently. The Barakaldo has 30% of its budget consigned to the fees of its partners. We do not live on television rights, therefore, we do not understand that we are prevented from having that income by our partners. The only thing we are doing with this proposal is thinking about Barakaldo and its partners.

Is the situation so critical to point out that, if they continue to compete, they would be “at serious risk of disappearance”?

– The situation of Barakaldo is not so delicate. We recognize that putting that in the statement has been too exaggerated. It was a slip, we manifested ourselves badly. We were referring more to the situation of football in general. Barakaldo is in bankruptcy, in the process of conversion to a public limited company and perhaps we are one of the clubs that runs the least risk.

In case your proposal is rejected, what path will you take?

– We have made a request, but we will abide by what the federative entities say. Of course we will compete. We have simply shown our opinion. In fact, I choose to end the season whenever it is. As if we have to play twice a week. Of course, as long as there are fans on the football fields.

Many have accused them of being advantageous, of proposing the stoppage because they are currently colistas.

– We have played two games and both away from home. There is still the whole season to play. Claiming this is nonsense, sheer madness. We are very happy with our squad, we have not had good results in the first two days, but we will get them. In addition, we do not ask for the suspension of the competition, we ask for the paralysis and postponement of the matches until the health situation is good enough for our fans to go to the field.

Are you studying a reduction in pay to the staff?

– Not at all. Barakaldo players are religiously collecting their payroll and they will continue to collect it throughout the season. We have a feasibility and contingency plan and we are going to meet all our commitments.
