Wallabies defeat All Blacks, Welcome to Country, Rugby League, Rugby, Reaction

The finale of a hectic five-week Bledisloe Cup four-game campaign kicked off with a slip of the tongue at the Welcome to Country that saw social media hit the market immediately.

Uncle Joe Kirk got the chance to do the Welcome to Country but inadvertently dropped the other code in his opening remarks.

“Good evening everyone, nice to be here tonight, another great night for the great rugby league game,” he said to begin his welcome to the country.

Back then, social media quickly made mistakes.

In front of 35,000 spectators at the end of a year when such crowds were barely seen in 2020, some nerves can be understood, but it could also be an example of how far Australian rugby has come.

Currently sixth in the world rankings and in front of a dead rubber from Bledisloe after losing the cup for the 18th time in a row, still not far from the drama and cash flow problems in Israel Folau and in the heartland of the rugby league play, it’s hard to blame him.

Especially after a win in Queensland, their home state, on Wednesday evening.

But the mistake turned out to be almost strangely accurate as the teams each had a player with a red card in the first half while the Wallabies only had 13 men on the field at half time when Marika Koroibete presented a yellow card.

When All Black Scott Barrett received a yellow card in the 67th minute, both teams had a stint with only 13 men on the field.

Scott Mackinnon, Channel 10 rugby host, pointed out the strangely prophetic nature of the comments.

“The Welcome to Country mentioned that you can enjoy a great game of rugby and it could end up being 13 against 13,” Mackinnon said at halftime.

Funnily enough, it was the former Wests Tigers and Melbourne Storm rugby player who became Wallabies star Koroibete and was named Man of the Game in a masterly portrayal.

But after the third game of the four series, in which Burundi-born singer David Nduwimana sang the national anthem, which was highly acclaimed online, the former runner-up of the Australian idol, Anthony Callea, praised all the work before the game.

“It’s so nice to see so much respect and unity with the Welcome to Country, the national anthems and the Haka before the #BledisloeCup. Especially in times like these, we as society and humanity have to see, appreciate and include such moments more often! “He wrote on Twitter.
