Thomas Detry, Belgian number one

Thomas Detry became, this Monday, the Belgian n ° 1 in the world ranking. Thanks to his fourth place at the Cyprus Showdown, the Brussels resident is now 77th in the hierarchy and therefore precedes Thomas Pieters, currently 82nd.

This is the first time that Thomas Detry has risen to the rank of national “number one”. This promotion is, in absolute terms, quite anecdotal. But it perfectly symbolizes the regularity and constant progress of the protégé of Michel Vanmeerbeek and Jérôme Theunis.

Its statistics are indeed impressive. This year, in 18 tournaments, he signed five Top 5 on the European Tour and missed only one cut. At the Race to Dubai, equivalent to the European ranking for the season, he now occupies fourteenth place and is therefore guaranteed to participate in the DP World Championship, the final package of the year which will bring together, in December, the first sixty.

“All my goals for the season have been achieved; all I need is this first title on the European Tour” confides the young 27-year-old champion who obviously does not intend to stop there. Often ideally placed to claim victory, Detry has so far failed to deliver the blow. Lack of success? Without a doubt. But he can also still clearly progress in the management of his emotions under pressure and in decisive moments. This will be his big challenge in 2021.
