At one point in the first quarter of Sunday’s 23:20 win over Washington at FedEx Field, the Giants had three newcomers on their offensive line.
Andrew Thomas started as usual with a left attack. Shane Lemieux started on the left for the second straight week, replacing Will Hernandez, who is on the reserve / COVID-19 list. Matt Peart, selected in the third round, replaced Cam Fleming, a rotation the Giants have been using for the past few weeks.
The Giants had 109 rushing yards at halftime, which was approved by Hernandez, who tweeted, “Hell yeah guys.”
At some point in the second quarter, underutilized Chad Slade came into play, replacing Lemieux on the left. In the fourth quarter, Thomas was on the bench and Peart was on the left, one rookie (third lap) instead of another (first lap).
“When it comes to tackle, we’re really three to two at this point,” said head coach Joe Judge. “As for the watch, Will should be back for us sooner rather than later. I plan to be three to two in these positions as well. We’ll try to all play at the game every week, making sure we stay fresh and give everyone experiences. ”
The final total: 35 rush attempts for 166 yards, both season highs.
“You have done a great job over the past few weeks,” said quarterback Daniel Jones. [Offensive line] Trainer [Marc] Colombo lets them spin the guys in and out and keep them fresh. We effectively ran the ball all day. That was a big advantage for us. These guys did a great job up front against a really good defensive front that had the ability to really influence the game and change the game. ”
The last five games of the Giants (two wins, three defeats) were decided with a total of 10 points. … TE Kaden Smith was forced out of the game with a concussion in the fourth quarter. Smith was a major factor in blocking the run before leaving the field.
Rookie WR Austin Mack, who was substituted on for veteran Golden Tate who was still at home, caught four passes for 72 yards, including breaking out for a 50-yard close in the first quarter setting up a field goal.
“Austin did a great job playing a lot of games for us,” said Jones. “He’s someone you can trust to be in the right place. I definitely have a lot of faith in him. ”
Jones could be heard shouting “Eli, Eli, Eli” as he changed a piece of the border, a check in honor of retired Eli Manning. Jones laughed when asked about it, saying Manning hadn’t contacted him yet.
“Maybe I’ll hear from him now,” Jones said.
