GEiEG facilities also began de-escalation yesterday. It is definitely not the year of the group, which just after celebrating the centenary, has encountered the storm Gloria and the cruel effects of the pandemic. Yesterday the resumption of the activity was done with the pools at 30% capacity, with prior reservation, scheduled times and limitations in the gym, fitness rooms and outdoor tennis, paddle and squash courts. Reopening was more necessary than ever, both for the regular user of the facilities and to ensure the survival of the entity, too punished in recent months.
For now, the president, Francesc Cayuela, put the drop in membership of the GEiEG at 20%. “People can play sports safely in our home. We have made great efforts in the human and material field.” Cayuela also called for flexibility “as soon as possible” the curfew to resume night training.
“The club is very financially affected. We came from the storm Gloria and then we had to be closed or half-gas for months, ”he recalled. In this sense, he did not hide the fact that “we have serious problems” and that they must survive “with the solidarity of everyone and our partners. We are working to make this viable. Cayuela called on the people of Girona: “We are a non-profit organization, of public utility, and we are here working for the city and for sport.”
Last winter, the effects of the storm Gloria caused damage to the facilities of Sant Ponç worth two million euros. Just when the facility was due to be 100% operational again, in March, confinement and coronavirus arrived. The GEiEG had to close again and was unable to resume activity until the summer. And a few weeks ago, with the new restrictions due to the pandemic, he had to lower the shutter again.
One of the aspects that worries Francesc Cayuela is the municipal confinement of weekends because in this way the partners from outside Girona are prevented from accessing the facilities. The GEiEG has been one of the most active clubs in demanding the reopening of the sport, being present in the mobilizations promoted by the UFEC.
