the finances of the Organizing Committee scrutinized by the Court of Auditors

In a provisional report with the content unveiled in Le Canard enchaîné, the Court of Auditors analyzes the budget and its management by the Organizing Committee for the Paris Olympic Games, chaired by Tony Estanguet. In particular, it points to potential additional costs and sometimes underestimated expenses.

Budget forecasts to be revised, high price of certain events organized by the OCOG, annual remuneration of the main leaders in question … The financial magistrates have combed everything with a fine comb and several points made them tick.

Their first concern was an additional cost of 400 million euros for the organization of the Olympic Games, in a particularly depressed economic context. Paris 2024 has already anticipated the savings to be made through, in particular, the reduction in the number of temporary equipment announced at the end of September.

Directors with comfortable salaries

But the court is also worried about an underestimation of the security component. Some 125 million additional euros would be needed, she said, for a more realistic vision. Also pinned in the report are the two media events set up in 2019: the revelation of the Games logo at the Grand Rex in Paris and Olympic Day at Place de la Concorde. The cost of the two events is almost $ 2.3 million, about 60% more than the initial estimate. For its part, the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games denies having paid so much.

Finally, the report is surprised by the salary of certain directors, particularly comfortable (between 120,000 and 245,000 euros gross per year). This is significantly less than for the bosses of the London Games in 2012, retorts the Organizing Committee, which will have the opportunity to answer all the questions of the Court by December 17, date of the revelation of the final map of competition venues.
