Since Costa, Sow and Durm are hardly in demand at Eintracht Frankfurt

Von Erik Durm has not been seen in a Eintracht competitive game for a long time. From a sporting point of view, the left-back has disappeared into oblivion: he had his last first division appearance on May 23 this year at 2: 5 in Frankfurt in Munich – for only 14 minutes of play. The 28-year-old did not make it into the squad of head coach Adi Hütter on the first seven match days of this season. The door for Durm, who is only allowed to present himself in test matches during the national team break, seems to be when it comes to points or advancing in the DFB Cup – even though the 2014 world champion still has a contract up to and including June 30th 2023 and those responsible for Eintracht initially believed in him.

When he signed up in July 2019, sports director Fredi Bobic saw the former national player as a “strong character and outstanding team player”. Durm played nationally and internationally at the highest level. “These experiences are a great added value for our team,” said Bobic. Today, Eintracht can hardly do anything with Durm on the flank positions. On the one hand, there is great competition in the squad, which is the second largest in the league with 32 players. And Durm obviously does not have the power of persuasion to assert himself on the Main with all his might. He’s too discouraged and too pale – these attributes were inherent in his appearances.

You can’t hear anything from Durm. To complain in public is not his type either. In a sense, he suffers in silence. So it is currently only said about him that he is still fully involved in training despite his supposed lack of prospects. This is an expression of his mentality and professional approach. But: With every further month without an assignment, his deficit in match practice increases. Even if he is financially secure for a long time in Frankfurt, it cannot be his aim to permanently assume the role of outsider in terms of sport. So it would make sense for Durm to tackle a new task in winter. What Durm can at least rely on: Eintracht would not make it difficult for him to change clubs, on the contrary. In financially difficult times due to the corona pandemic, the club would benefit from savings in personnel costs.

Djibril Sow is currently thinking about his prospects of becoming a recognized player in the Bundesliga in Frankfurt. The player who was worth a lot of money for Eintracht in the summer of 2019: With a transfer fee of around ten million euros, which the Hessen Bern promised, the midfielder was Frankfurt’s record purchase at the time. The Swiss international has not yet been able to provide evidence that the investment paid off for Eintracht. Sow’s working time account shows a total of just 30 minutes of playing time in the Bundesliga. In four out of seven encounters, he only had a place on the bench. At Sow, the trend is now even in decline.

Sow does not live up to the high expectations of Hütter, who promised a performance boost for the 23-year-old in the second first division year. In the preseason, the Austrian Hütter showed great patience with the Swiss national player and held on to him even after unsatisfactory performance. Hütter hoped that Sow, who he said had “incredible potential”, would find his way around better and better with plenty of match practice. But now Sow ranks only behind Sebastian Rode, Stefan Ilsanker and Dominik Kohr in the internal hierarchy. The once highly praised lack of constancy at a high level. Perhaps also the absolute will to assert oneself against resistance.

Danny da Costa experienced a crash in the coach’s favor. Being an indispensable frequent player like in the 2018/2019 season is a thing of the past for him. At 2-2 in Stuttgart, Hütter had no use for the flank player in the squad. Newcomer Amin Younes and returnees Aymen Barkok overtook da Costa in this round. In addition, Almamy Touré often had the opportunity to prove himself. Since Costa’s career opportunities in Frankfurt have shrunk significantly. In the previous transfer period, da Costa was apparently already dealing with a transfer to Schalke 04. Although both clubs are said to have agreed, it was said that the 27-year-old had refrained from a change. In winter, da Costa could make a new attempt to change jobs. He shouldn’t be the only Eintracht professional.
