Serena Williams celebrates 25 years as a professional tennis player

In 1995 the American Serena Williams made her professional debut when she was only 14 years old. In her 25-year career, the 39-year-old has collected 23 Grand Slam titles and largely dominated the women’s tour for many years.

Serena turned pro in September 1995 at the age of 14. Due to her age, she was not allowed to participate in tournaments sponsored by the WTA and initially only had to participate in events that did not belong to this organization.

Her first professional participation was the Bell Challenge in Quebec. The Michigan native, who was defeated 6-1 and 6-1 by Annie Miller, has since had an incredible career. Serena comes from a poor family with her older sister Venus Williams.

Her father, Richard Williams, was her trainer. In the U10 category alone, the youngest of the Williams sisters had a record of 46 wins and 3 losses. Serena Williams’ first Grand Slam win came in 1999 at the US Open, where she defeated Martina Hingis from Switzerland.

Serena has collected 73 singles titles, 23 of which are Grand Slams

So far, Serena Williams has won 23 individual Grand Slam titles, including: 7 Australian Open, 3 Roland Garros, 7 Wimbledon and 6 US Open. She also has a good track record in doubles as she won 14 titles and 2 mixed doubles trophies with her sister.

By winning her seventh Australian Open in 2017, the 39-year-old became the only record holder for the number of Grand Slam titles in the open era. In this way she surpasses Steffi Graf (22 titles) and is now looking for Margaret Court’s coveted record with 24 Grand Slam titles.

At the Olympics, Serena Williams won 4 gold medals, including 3 in doubles with her sister. At 39 years old and a 25-year career, Serena Williams has won 73 singles titles and spent 319 weeks as the world’s number one.

Serena is now recovering from the injury at Roland Garros and is already looking forward to her next participation in the Australian Open in 2021.
