Ronaldo V-Football: A tribute to the phenomenon at a difficult time – Record Gaming

It was May of the year 2000. Ronaldo Nazário’s fans – not just Inter fans – were still in shock with the injury the Brazilian had suffered in the previous month, in that bitter return to the competition against Lazio. The right knee could not take it and football would be deprived of one of the best strikers ever for over a year.

However, fans could remember Ronaldo on the pitch a few weeks later, albeit in a virtual way. 20 years later, Record Gaming revisited Ronaldo V-Football!

There are those who say that the timing of the game’s launch was not the best due to the player’s situation, but it was necessary to honor the agreements made and PlayStation and Game Boy were anxiously awaiting the title of PAM Development. And so, on May 20, 2000, Ronaldo V-Football saw the light of day.

Big Three and Selection Gifts

Curiously, I bought the version for Nintendo’s laptop in France, but the seven languages present in the game, including Brazilian Portuguese, made it easier. The image of the game was Ronaldo dressed in the jersey of the Brazilian team and the soundtrack could not miss a samba smell.

The football simulator was aimed at teams, but it also had several clubs, including the three big Portuguese, although under geographical names: Lisboa A (Benfica), Lisboa B (Sporting) and Porto (this one can guess). However, all team names were editable. The National Team was also represented by the beautiful generation of that time.

In the game modes we found a friendly match, the Ronaldo Cups (triangular or quadrangle mini-tournaments), cup (competition to be eliminated) and league (the traditional championship format), with space for a training mode.

The gameplay was … what it was for the time, with graphics far removed from the PlayStation version. In any case, the music from the stands helped to disguise the flaws in the course of the matches, which had two levels of difficulty (easy and normal). The game was supported on Game Boy Color, which greatly improved the experience compared to the monochrome version.

A super Ronaldo

Ronaldo

In a game with the name of the Phenomenon, it was to be expected that his in-game statistics would be something … beneficial to him. In fact, Ronaldo had 99 in several aspects, such as speed, endurance, aggressiveness, dribbling and passing. And those who did not like it had good medicine, because there were other simulators even better reputed on the market. But this was special and it was even more so at that difficult time in the player’s life.
