Rio Ferdinand makes Liverpool transfer claim against Timo Werner and Diogo Jota

Rio Ferdinand asked if Liverpool were ever interested in Timo Werner.

Jürgen Klopp was desperate to add attack reinforcements to his squad in the summer transfer window before a grueling campaign was scheduled.

For some time it looked like clinical and fast striker Werner from RB Leipzig would be Liverpool’s main target. The club decided against a move, however, and the German moved to Chelsea instead – where he had a strong start in the Premier League.

The Reds signed Diogo Jota from Wolves, who had an even bigger impact at his new club, scoring eight goals in his first twelve games.

Since the signing went so well, Ferdinand wondered if the club was ever there for Werner.

“I am probably wondering if you really play against Werner,” he said at BT Sport before the 2-0 defeat by Atalanta.

“Because Jota came around pretty quickly after that and they all seemed very happy with it.”

Ferdinand has also praised Liverpool’s mentality for how they reacted to Virgil van Dijk’s injury at the end of the season.

He added: “It’s the way he has the mentality that he created when Virgil van Dijk was injured. You see it – they have played seven games since then – six won, one drawn.”

“Your defensive record – you conceded three goals. It has improved even if Van Dijk is out.”

“It’s about creating this mentality, creating this environment where the players think they won’t suffer because a big cog in their system is gone and they’ll prove to people wrong.”
