The German Ice Hockey League (DEL) was the first of the major German leagues to cancel its season last March due to the corona pandemic. After two postponements, the start of the new season is finally fixed. The new season should start a week before Christmas. Eight teams are already playing a preparatory tournament to get fit for the season.

The Wolfsburg Grizzlies are also at the start of the Magenta Sport Cup. For their defender Janik Möser it will be a long time before he can play again. The 25-year-old moved from Mannheim to Wolfsburg in the summer, but Möser cannot think of playing ice hockey at the moment.
He tested positive for the coronavirus in October and was then placed in a two-week quarantine. Before returning to training, the Wolfsburg-based company performed, among other things, a stress ECG with Möser, which produced significantly different results than the previous examinations in the summer before the corona disease.
The examinations revealed an inflammation of the heart muscle in the well-trained professional athlete. The Wolfsburg doctors most likely attribute the disease to the corona virus. “Apart from Corona, Janik couldn’t find anything that could have been the trigger,” team doctor Axel Gänsslen told the “Wolfsburger Nachrichten”. “We cannot say that with 100 percent certainty, but with a very high probability,” said Wolfsburg manager Karl-Heinz Fliegauf.
“Do not take corona infection lightly”
Möser would now like to use his illness as a warning for other athletes: “With my case, I would like to point out to other professional and amateur athletes that they should not take a corona infection lightly,” said Möser.
After the EKG had been taken, he was examined by a specialist in the Berlin Charité who diagnosed the myocarditis. The defender is currently not allowed to participate in training. The next check-up is planned for January.
Doctors have long assumed that corona infection can lead to cardiovascular complications even in competitive athletes. A research project on this was started at the University Clinic in Tübingen in July. Health expert Karl Lauterbach (SPD) also said in a dpa interview: “A very important study in the Journal of American Cardiology at the University of Frankfurt has shown that there are still heart changes in younger corona patients months afterwards. The study found that heart changes were seen in 78 percent of those affected. “
