NFL: Cowboys and Lions’ pathetic display

The great American Thanksgiving holiday gave rise to a demonstration of rare patheticism. The Cowboys and Lions managed to make the sad spectacle almost entertaining, by virtue of their distressing incompetence.

The Cowboys have been downgraded in all facets of the game and even more so in coaching, against the Washington team. This one appropriated the first rank of the hilarious Eastern division of the national conference, but the band of Rivera does not hear any more laughter for the next years through this masquerade.

But back to the Cowboys … Hiring Mike McCarthy as head coach is proving to be a pitiful experience. His questionable decisions on fourth downs sounded the death knell for the Cowboys. The feint of placement will go down in history as one of the most grotesque attempts in history.

Despite an armada of quality receivers, the attack regressed. Even Dak Prescott, if he was healthy, wouldn’t be able to root this club out of its quagmire. In the middle of Thanksgiving, it was in Dallas that the turkey was the most indigestible. The farce, meanwhile, has been spewed out across the continent. Not exactly the image we have of the “America team” …

That of Washington, which dropped its nickname last summer, continues to make a name for itself. The record of 4-7 is nothing to surprise and Ron Rivera’s troops are still far from the goal.

Already, however, the defense is showing its teeth. No other in the league does better against the pass, which no one saw coming. The collection of first-round picks on the defensive front pays clear dividends.

In Terry McLaurin, the attack is on a receiver who has produced since his arrival in the NFL, despite a series of generally mediocre quarterbacks. Carrier Antonio Gibson is revealed week by week as a future star.

In Alex Smith, we find an inspiring general, a true survivor. It has its limits, but in the short term it can be of great service.

He has just scored a critical victory, two years after his excruciating injury that led to 17 leg operations. Well done !

Lions in agony

Earlier today, the Texans spanked the Lions. Besides, everyone spanks Lions these days. Their last four losses have been recorded by gaps of at least 14 points.

Even when the delay started to widen, they never showed the slightest sense of urgency. Obviously, no one would do it on purpose to drag the slippers on the ground. It would be too dangerous for the players.

Nevertheless, the Lions are not animated by the rage to win to save the fragile position of their pilot Matt Patricia.

The losing culture has been embedded for too long and Matt Patricia will not change it.

He inherited a 9-7 squad which, while not being dominant, was at least exciting to watch. He made them a team that wanders without a guideline and which plays without an ounce of consistency. Whether Patricia’s end is imminent or comes at the end of the season, there is no more salvation.

Fortunately, America is blessing Deshaun Watson, who saved the day. In his last six games, the quarterback has accumulated 15 touchdown passes, without interceptions. He’s playing at the elite level of the circuit at his position.

Many insist that the coach who takes over after the season will inherit a thin bank of choices. But with a gem like Watson on board, the wind can turn excessively fast.
