NBA Former Hawks player passed away at 65
Eddie Johnson, a two-time all-star in his time as a player for the Atlanta Hawks in the early 1980s, has died at the age of 65 at the Santa Rosa Correctional Facility in Florida, where the former player is serving a sentence for life imprisonment.
Johnson, an electric point guard of 1.88 meters, was chosen by the Hawks in the third round of the 1977 draft. In Atlanta he played the first nine of his 10 seasons and with the Georgia franchise he became a starter in the All Star in 1980 and 1981 after averaging more than 19 points per game.
In 1986 the Hawks decided to trade ‘Fast Eddie’ as they called him in the NBA, to the Cavaliers, who soon after sent him to Seattle. In the 86-87 season, the Sonics cut the Auburn player for cocaine consumption and the NBA suspended him for the rest of his career.
The problems for Johnson did not end there. He returned to Florida and, completely dominated by cocaine, accumulated crimes until he was arrested more than 100 times and went to prison twice. Robbery, fraud, drug trafficking … Until in 2006, Johnson was sentenced to life in prison in Florida after a court found him guilty of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl.
