Manchester United has been hit by a cyber attack on its systems but says they are currently not aware of any personal data breaches related to our fans and customers.

The Red Devils confirmed the hacking on Friday night, saying not only that they had “put in place procedures for such an event” but also stressed that the Premier League game against West Brom will take place at Old Trafford on Saturday.

A statement from the club said: “Manchester United can confirm that the club has experienced a cyber attack on our systems.

‘The club has taken swift action to contain the attack and is currently working with expert advisors to investigate the incident and minimize the ongoing IT disruption.

‘While this is a sophisticated operation by organized cyber criminals, the club has extensive protocols and procedures in place for such an event and has rehearsed this eventuality.

‘Our cyber defense identified the attack and shut down the affected systems to contain the damage and protect data.

Club media channels, including our website and app, are not affected and we are currently not aware of any personal data breaches of our fans and customers.

“We are confident that all of the critical systems required for the Old Trafford games remain secure and operational and that tomorrow’s game against West Bromwich Albion continues.”

A United spokesman added, “This type of attack is becoming more common and is something to rehearse for.”

United has notified the information commissioner’s office as necessary, and the club says that a forensic track is being conducted to investigate further details of the attack.
