Lutz Pfannenstiel: “I’ve always been a cross-head and a dissident”

Lutz Pfannenstiel is the first player in the world to belong to a professional football club in each of the six continental associations. The former goalkeeper was most recently a manager at Fortuna Düsseldorf and has already taken another job in the USA.

WORLD ON SUNDAY: You enjoy the reputation of a globetrotter. You have now signed a contract in St. Louis with a Major League Soccer club that runs until 2025. Are you changing your life? Do you want to settle down?

Lutz Pfannenstiel: Well, I’ve calmed down a lot over the past decade. I worked in Germany for ten years, eight of which at TSG Hoffenheim. An incredibly long time for me. I wouldn’t have thought that before either. It was always clear to me that at some point I would work abroad again. I am simply attracted by the new, the different, the unknown.

WORLD ON SUNDAY: Your career is like a parable for pronounced wanderlust. Where does the urge to discover the foreign and the distant come from?
