Llopart, the first Spanish Olympic medalist in athletics, dies

Llopart, in addition, was closely linked to the council of Onís, specifically Benia, a town he used to visit to enjoy a few days of rest in the 1980s, in the company of his wife, María del Carmen Arobes.

The loss of this esteemed athlete has been felt among the athletes of the Asturian East. When he was on the cusp of the march, the Catalan gave a screening, accompanied by a talk, organized by the Cangas de Onís Atletismo club, which some of the attendees still remember. “We were crazy happy with that talk from an entire Olympic runner-up, here in Cangas. I think it was at the end of the 80s or the beginning of the 90s, on the ground floor of the Women’s Boarding School, where the current Retirement Home is located, ”said Toni Fernández, co-founder of the Cangas de Onís Atletismo club and former president of the entity. “He was a friend, but he wasn’t very close, either. He was a good countryman and easygoing ”, added Antonio Niembro, a hotelier from Benia de Onís.
