HSV boss Marcell Jansen now wants to sell intimate hygiene – people

The start-up section “John Belongs” is about tomorrow’s companies. Who are the people behind the new business ideas? Stories, conversations and observations from the world of the founders.

Today ex-national player Marcell Jansen (35) doesn’t care anymore!

As the president and chairman of the supervisory board of the second division soccer team Hamburger SV, one might think that Jansen has no time for outside jobs. But: You thought wrong!

Jansen is one of those professional footballers who privately invest in or set up start-ups!

Together with the Hamburg series founders Hauke Windmüller and Benjamin Reiss, he has now launched the cosmetics start-up Groomed Rooster. Their first product is called “Le Coq Rock”. It is about healthy intimate hygiene for men.

I beg your pardon?

Marcell Jansen tells BILD about the idea: “Whether in sport or in everyday life, friction and sweat cause unpleasant smells in men – especially in the intimate area. Many women who we asked beforehand about their expectations of men have confirmed this to us. Odors are usually more intense due to wrong and also unhealthy products. This is a problem that we want to solve with our intimate hygiene idea for men, also for the sake of women. It can’t be a one-way street anymore. Another is the subject of chafing, which everyone probably knows who goes jogging or cycling

With their intimate investment, Jansen and his colleagues join the group of founders who want to land a million dollar idea with men’s cosmetics.

In America, the company “Manscaped”, one of the market leaders in the field of intimate cosmetics, is already doing this. After three years, the company is already generating around 69 million dollars in sales.

For Jansen, care was also a big issue during his active career: “The classic in the shower during my football days was coconut cream, which many teammates used. It was simply sensational because it was healthy and helped the skin. “

Today Jansen invests through its own holding company, especially in the area of ”health”.

He to BILD: “Ten years ago I first co-founded a medical supply store concept in Mönchengladbach. After that, because of my gluten intolerance, I took part in a gluten-free patisserie (e.g. pastries) and started a Californian “Street Kitchen” for healthy eating in Hamburg with Steffen Henssler and another partner. ”Today, Jansen focuses primarily on start-ups that are in the so-called “early stage” phase, i.e. at the beginning of the foundation.

“My parents said that I was always a very creative boy in the past, who had visions and was able to quickly combine different things,” Jansen explains when asked where his interest in founding a business comes from. “As a footballer, you can’t keep up with what’s going on in your career. Especially in the long phases of the injury, I had time to reflect on everything that was going on in this bubble. And it became clear to me that I shouldn’t be blinded, but have to think about what I will do when I can no longer play football. “

In his current work as an investor and founder, Marcell Jansen claims that he also benefits from the various Bundesliga coaches with whom he has worked during his career.

“During my active time, I had great mentors who encouraged me to think disruptively. Of course, I also learned a lot from my soccer coaches such as Ottmar Hitzfeld, Jupp Heynckes and Jogi Löw. For example, when it comes to group behavior in team sports. If you are founding, you are not alone either! But it must also be noted that the role of a manager has changed completely today. Today you should be able to inspire more, be communicative and able to work in a team. “

In the BILD interview, Jansen also talks about his biggest failure as an investor. At the age of 29, he ended his professional career as a footballer because of his idea of ”Picue”, a social network for football clubs.

“I was so convinced and invested millions in the idea at the time, but in the end it didn’t work. That was a lot of money for me. I wanted to do everything and didn’t focus on my strengths. That was a mistake, so failure was important to realize it. “

When asked which footballer he would like to found a start-up with, Jansen replies: “With Poldi! I’ve known him since I was a youngster. Then we found ourselves in the national team. Poldi is authentic and a sensational guy! I would like to do something with Poldi. “
