Grandparents are no longer supposed to pick up from daycare

KDay care centers and schools are responding to the increasing corona numbers with stricter rules. This applies, for example, to picking up children from daycare. In a current letter to parents from a Protestant daycare center in the Main-Taunus district, it is said that the corona situation is worsening “at the moment very quickly”. As a result, parents have not been allowed to enter the daycare building since Monday and have to hand their child over at the entrance – as was customary in the daycare centers in spring. Another new rule is even more important for some families. Because in the parents’ letter it goes on to say: “Avoid other people who do not belong to your household picking up your child.” This also applies to grandparents, who in many families regularly pick up their grandchildren.

Daycare centers that are now setting up such rules act in the interests of the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs. The recommendation that if possible people from the same household should bring and pick up the child can be found in the hygiene recommendations of the authority.

Move without contact

Teachers are now also exercising more caution when it comes to physical education in schools. Shortly before the end of the autumn vacation, the particularly affected districts and cities in the Rhine-Main area agreed with Minister of Social Affairs Kai Klose (The Greens) that school sports from the fifth grade onwards would initially only take place outdoors and without contact for two weeks. The younger ones are allowed to go to the gyms, but should also move without contact.

On the recommendation, many schools also canceled groups such as dancing or badminton in their sports halls. Many a teacher inserts a unit of sports theory.

The administrative staff will meet again in Frankfurt on Tuesday to discuss the corona measures that have been decided so far and, if necessary, to make adjustments. With an incidence of 199.6 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days, Frankfurt is the most severely affected city in all of Hesse. According to health department head Stefan Majer (The Greens), the daily evaluation of the number of new infections must not automatically lead to new restrictions being imposed. “In the midst of the multitude of measures, the line that the citizens should implement and follow must become clearer again,” he says. In the background, intensive work is being done to ensure that “an impending lockdown can be prevented with clear guidelines”.

Already busy

In order to be able to ensure the medical care of all patients even with increasing numbers of infections, the planning staff of the state government has also taken some additional measures. The hospitals were informed in a general decree that they had to provide a total of 607 intensive care beds and 1226 normal beds for the care of corona patients. In supply area 4 (Frankfurt-Offenbach), escalation level 2 also applies to the hospitals, as these are already busy. People for whom it is medically justifiable should be assigned to hospitals in the other supply areas. In addition, Hessen has been distributing additional corona protective equipment to health facilities since this week. According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, more than 17 million masks and around five million protective gloves are to go to hospitals, nursing homes, the emergency services and facilities for youth, drug and homeless help.

Due to the increasing number of corona infections, Wiesbaden is now also pulling on other strings. From Thursday onwards, only five people or relatives from two households may be in public space together. A maximum of ten people may come together for private celebrations, for example in restaurants. For meetings in private rooms, the recommendation remains: a maximum of ten people from a maximum of two households. “Meetings and events as well as cultural offers such as theater, operas, concerts, cinemas and similar events with more than 50 people are prohibited from now on,” said the city.

The confusion surrounding a recommendation that was included in the current general decree on Saturday evening shows how important clear communication is. Accordingly, a mask should also be worn in a vehicle if members from more than two households are traveling. The driver is also called upon to wear mouth and nose protection. Isn’t that in contradiction to the ban on masking the wheel? The legal office has checked the recommendation and approved it, the health department head assures. “There is still enough of the face left that you can identify the person on a speed camera photo.”
