Good performance of Badminton Soria in the National sub-15

Among demanding security measures, and behind closed doors, the Palacio de los Deportes de Santander hosted this weekend the Spanish Under-15 Championship which, in a normal situation, would have been held in May. The most anticipated event for the best national rackets in the category began after noon on Friday, and met the current champions of Spain with the dispute of the finals on Sunday morning.

Once again, the Soria-CS24 Badminton Club managed to qualify two of its players for the Championship. Ana Peñaranda in the female individual modality, and Javier Barrios in the male individual and mixed doubles modality (despite not having been able to dispute this due to the last minute withdrawal of her Navarrese partner Nerea Eraso), were the Soria representatives who traveled to Cantabria together with coach Víctor Ortega.

To get the championship off to a good start, both Ana and Javier in their respective singles teams surpassed the round of the 30th finals in their first match. Ana overcame Aitana Ares from Zamora with partials of 21-17 / 21-10 while Javier, in a more disputed match, knocked out Ramón Rovira from Ibiza by 21-13 / 16-21 / 21-15.

In the round of 32 the draw resulted in Ana facing the Balearic Blanca Cañellas, before whom she had already played on another occasion and in which the victory had then fallen on the side of the Soriana. This time the same fate was not met and Ana said goodbye to the championship by 15-21 / 16-21. For his part, Javier overcame a new round by beating Rubén Pedreño (Cartagena) by 21-15 / 21-9 without too much difficulty, thus placing himself among the sixteen best players in the tournament.

Already on the day of Saturday, and with the goal of the round of 16 fulfilled, Barrios was measured against the Balearic Iago Martínez, third favorite of the championship and runner-up of Spain in the end. Despite the good feelings of the Club Badminton Soria player in recent weeks, and the motivation with which he faced the match, Javier had no options and was out of the fight for the medals with partials of 12-21 / 10-21 . Thus he adds a great ninth place in a category in which the potential of many players makes the fight for metals more and more complicated.

With this national participation, Ana Peñaranda says goodbye to the sub-15 category with a good taste to continue his sporting career in a higher category, while Javier Barrios, still in his second year, will have a new opportunity to improve the ninth place achieved in Santander in an upcoming Spanish Championship scheduled for February 2021.
