Argentina: the remains of Maradona arrived at the presidential palace for the funeral vigil

The coffin containing the body of Diego Maradona, football legend who died Wednesday, arrived at the Argentine presidential palace in Buenos Aires where the wake will be held, according to images from sports channels TyC and ESPN.

Diego Maradona’s coffin arrived at the presidential palace this Thursday morning. He was transported in an ambulance accompanied by an important security device, AFP noted.

Hundreds of people were already lining up in front of the presidential palace (Casa Rosada) to be able to take leave of the 1986 world champion, who died at the age of 60 of a heart attack.

The wake for the general public will take place Thursday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time (9 a.m. to 7 p.m. GMT), a statement from the presidency said.

His ex wife and two daughters arrived at the presidential palace

The idol’s ex-wife, Claudia Villafañe, and their two daughters Dalma and Gianinna, had gone to Casa Rosada shortly before midnight.

Following them came the president of the Argentinian Football Federation (AFA), Claudio Tapia, and active or retired players, including teammates of Maradona from the epic of the 1986 World Cup, won by the Albiceleste in Mexico.

Three days of national mourning

These people were invited to take private leave, before the opening to the public.

Argentine President Alberto Fernandez has decreed three days of national mourning.

Maradona’s death occurred at noon Wednesday from a heart attack at her home in the northern suburbs of Buenos Aires.
