The Ontario Hockey League bans body checking to prevent the spread of COVID-19

The Ontario Hockey League won’t have body checking this season due to COVID-19.

Lisa MacLeod, Ontario’s sports minister, said Friday that it was necessary to remove targeted physical contact from the game to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

MacLeod said the decision was influenced by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, which had multiple COVID-19 outbreaks on their teams this fall.

The OHL said Thursday it was planning to start a shortened season on February 4th.
