The Greens could quadruple the number in the Qld parliament

The Greens could quadruple their seats in Queensland Parliament after an outstanding performance in Saturday’s state election.

Amy MacMahon, arguably the campaign’s biggest scalp, declared victory in downtown South Brisbane, overthrowing former Labor heavyweight Jackie Trad.

Queensland Green Senator Larissa Waters said it was an amazing feat on her team.

“This is the culmination of years of hard work and some really strong candidates,” she told NCA NewsWire.

Green strategist Max Chandler-Mather said the party was on track with more than 40 percent of the primary vote in South Brisbane and Maiwar.

The highest number of votes ever recorded for the party at the state level was in 2019 when Jenny Leong secured 46 percent in the NSW election in Newtown, downtown Sydney.

Incumbent Green Michael Berkman was reinstated as a member for Maiwar, while Ms. Waters said she was confident Katinka Winston-Allom would win the Cooper seat after Labor Secretary Kate Jones decided to extend her political career.

“I knew we would do well in Cooper, but she just took it off the charts,” she said.

“It is well deserved because she is an excellent candidate.”

The other controversial electorate is McConnel’s.

The Minister of Labor Education, Grace Grace, is fighting to keep her seat.

The Greens candidate Kirsten Lovejoy chooses third place, but Ms. Waters said she hasn’t given up hope.

“We look like we have at least doubled, even tripled or quadrupled our seats in parliament,” she said, adding that the party voted well in Greenslopes and Miller.

There was also a swing towards the green at the Moggill headquarters west of Brisbane.
