Sexual abuse in sport: Expert explains how parents can protect their children

SPIEGEL: Ms. Andresen, you are the chairman of the independent commission to come to terms with child sexual abuse, which has been calling on those affected by sport to report for the past year and a half. What is your balance sheet?

Andresen: We are only at the beginning with the processing in sport. Around a hundred people have reported to the Commission. Affected people, but also people who, as relatives, friends or employees in clubs, want to report on child sexual abuse in sport. The number is not representative, we must also assume that there is a large number of unreported cases here. The willingness of those affected to report on the process is very important. Because every single story is very valuable.

SPIEGEL: What do they tell you about?

Andresen: For many of them it was the first time that they spoke to the Commission about the abuse they experienced. Some report of excessive contact, but also of rape. The sports in which those affected were active are not limited to a few, but show the entire spectrum.

SPIEGEL: What did people tell you?
