New Pels coach closes debate on Zion’s post

Listed as a 4 since joining the NBA, Zion Williamson has played as such for the majority of the time at the Pelicans. Will this change with the arrival of the new coach? The latter gave a quick update on the situation.

Considered a 5 before the NBA, Zion Williamson changed post when he joined the Pelicans. Often shifted to 4 alongside a Derrick Favors, or young Jaxson Hayes, the colossus does not yet know where he will play for 2021. With the change of coach, and the arrival of Stan Van Gundy on the bench, we are says Zion might just slide more often as a pivot.

Last year, the Pels were an excellent team with a lineup geared towards small-ball, and therefore with Zion as 5. An experience to repeat for 2021? Sure, and SVG isn’t against the idea. During his press conference, he made a point on the subject.

I don’t look at it and just say to myself: “Is that a 4 or a 5?” “. I’m not sure it works that way with him. You have to analyze his game and discuss with him what he likes, what works for him and things like that. It should not be limited to a position on the floor.

The former Pistons coach did not fail to praise his star either:

He’s unique, he’s not like a LeBron, who always carries the ball to different positions. Barkley is perhaps a better comparison for Zion. Everyone sees and judges him on his great body, but his first step is incredible, and he is truly selfless on the floor. He makes quick decisions which makes teammates enjoy playing with him.

Stan Van Gundy now has the heavy task of taking the Pelicans to the playoffs, and that goes through his use of Zion Williamson. New Orleans is one to watch next year just for that!
