Milot Rashica change from Werder Bremen to Bayer Leverkusen bursts

WITHWhite requests for transfers have failed, only one sale has generated the urgently needed millions in income: Werder Bremen has experienced a turbulent end to the transfer period. The move from Milot Rashica to Bayer Leverkusen failed on Monday evening only in the last minutes of the transition period.

The Kosovo international had already traveled to Leverkusen. However, the two clubs could not agree on the modalities of the transfer. Werder had always hoped to be able to raise at least 20 million euros for their supposedly most sought-after player this summer. Bayer 04, however, initially only wanted to loan the 24-year-old. “The talks only really started at noon,” said Bremen sports director Frank Baumann at a press conference that evening. “The negotiations were complex, but we didn’t want to give the player below value. In the end, there was not enough time to find a solution. “

This was also confirmed by Leverkusen’s sports director Rudi Völler to the “kicker”: “There were difficulties with the purchase option. Bremen and we had different ideas about that. In the end, there wasn’t enough time for an agreement, ”said the former Werder professional.

Only Klaassen fills financial holes

For weeks during this first transfer period under the conditions of a corona pandemic, it looked as if the Bremen-based company could compensate for its immense loss of income, primarily through a sale of Rashica. RB Leipzig and Aston Villa were also long considered interested. In the end, Werder plugged some of its financial holes by returning Davy Klaassen to Ajax Amsterdam.

The club received a basic amount of eleven million euros for the 27-year-old midfielder. The sum can rise to 14 million euros through bonus payments. “It was clear to us that we would not let Davy go at any price, but only if our ideas were met,” said Baumann. Klaassen signed a four-year contract with his old and new club.

The Bremen striker Johannes Eggestein also left on Monday. He is on loan to ASK Linz for a year. Werder did not get the wanted Klaassen replacement for the midfield. The preferred candidate was the Serbian international Marko Grujic from Liverpool FC, who had played in the Bundesliga for Hertha BSC for the past two years. But here too the negotiations failed because of the money. “We made the decision yesterday that there would be no new players. This is primarily due to our financial situation. That may be underestimated, but we are suffering from the effects of the pandemic, “said Baumann.
