Robert Lewandowski has had the best season of his career. While the greats of the game bow to the FC Bayern striker, in retrospect one feels too little appreciated: Mário Jardel.

Vor just under two weeks ago, Robert Lewandowski, 32, was named Europe’s Footballer of the Year. The FC Bayern striker is the first player after Johan Cruyff to win the championship, cup and Champions League triple and become the top goalscorer in all competitions.

Many greats in the game have bowed to Poland’s achievements in recent weeks. But someone who was never one of the greatest himself considers the praise to be overrated. Or to put it another way: his own career was probably not appreciated enough.

Mário Jardel, now 47 years old, told the Portuguese sports newspaper “Record” about Lewandowski: “We are not alike. I made history, I am unique. I say that with humility. Lewandowski is a player who scores 45 to 60 goals a year. But I showed that for six or seven years in a row. ”

“My market value would be between 150 and 200 million euros”

Mario Jardel? The Brazilian once played for FC Porto, Sporting Lisbon and Galatasaray Istanbul. In 1999 and 2002 he won the Golden Shoe as Europe’s best goalscorer. A title that Lewandowski is actually still missing, last season he was narrowly defeated by Ciro Immobile (Lazio).

Hansi Flick praises “outstanding Robert Lewandowski”

FC Bayern wins a turbulent game against Hertha BSC. Coach Hansi Flick praises the four-time goalscorer Robert Lewandowski, but also warns.

Otherwise, Jardel has not made the leap into a major European league in his career, which ended in 2011, nor was he a factor in his national team. He never got past Ronaldo and only played ten internationals for Brazil, in which he only scored one goal.

Nevertheless, Jardel is certain: “If I were a player today, my market value would be between 150 and 200 million euros.” By way of comparison: Paris’ Kylian Mbappé is currently the most valuable player with a market value of 180 million euros. Cristiano Ronaldo is € 60 million, Lionel Messi € 100 million.
