Jimmy Garoppolo threw three touchdown passes in the first half as the San Francisco 49ers broke a two-game loss with a 24-16 win over the Los Angeles Rams in a matchup for the last two NFC champions.

George Kittle caught seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown to trigger a 49ers offensive that did most of their damage in the first half en route to a 21-6 lead.

The San Francisco defense – last seen scoring 436 yards and 43 points in the home games against the Miami Dolphins last week – slowed the Rams down significantly in the first half while cornerback Jason Verrett had the crucial game of the game – an interception End zone in the third quarter – to eliminate any chances of a Rams comeback in the second half.

Garoppolo, who threw two interceptions before being benched at half time in that ugly loss to the Dolphins, had a great first half, throwing touchdown passes from six yards to Deebo Samuel, 44 to Kittle and two yards to Brandon Aiyuk .

Garoppolo finished the game 23-for-33 for 268 yards and the three points. By comparison, Jared Goff only made 19 of his 38 passes for 198 yards – with two TDs and Verrett’s pick in the third quarter.

Garoppolo’s goals against Samuel and Kittle led the 49ers 14-0 in the first minute of the second quarter before the Rams countered with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Goff to Robert Woods.

Samuel Sloman’s extra point attempt was blocked, and the 49ers jumped 15 points as Aiyuk scored his first touchdown catch of the season for previous runs.

The Rams were outscored 291 yards to 102 yards in a one-sided first half, with Goff 5-of-12 for just 42 yards, but they were greatly improved after the break.

A 42-yard field goal from Sloman brought the result to 21-9, and the Rams had a chance to pull within range of the Niners after a nine-time, 60-yard drive later in the third half, only to intercept Verret could Goff’s throw for Josh Reynolds in fourth and goalscorer from the two-yard line.

After a 49-yard field goal from Robbie Gould for the 49ers, Goff finally found Reynolds for a 40-yard TD to make it a one-score game with more than three minutes left to play, but the Rams wouldn’t get the ball back when the San Francisco clock ran.
