Kiplimo and Jepchirchir on show, with Arrospide in the top 100

Tremendous exhibition offered in Gdynia (Poland) by the Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo and Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir in a half marathon World Cup in which the Gipuzkoan Iraitz Arrospide, with 1h04: 07, finished in the top 100 (position 84).

Jepchirchir, who arrived as world record holder in races only for women (1h05: 34), improved her time in a race of a very high level and won the finish line with a time of 1h05: 16, by 1h05: 18 for the German of Ethiopian origin Melat Yisak (European record) and the 1h05: 19 achieved by the Ethiopian Yalemzerf Yehualaw. It was the latter’s country that took the lead in the team classification, with Kenya in second place and Germany in third. The Spanish team occupied the 14th position thanks to the 33rd place of the Catalan Marta Galimany (1h11: 08, personal best), the 56th place of the Alava Elena Loyo (1h12: 44) and the 61st position of Laura Méndez (1h12: 58) .

38 of the first 50 women improved their personal time, there were seven national records and the first six classified fell from 1h06 (the first time something like this has happened). With what the winner could not in a circuit they had to do four laps and that had quite a few slopes was the world record in races with male hares (1:04:31 by Ababel Yeshaneh), although he did improve hers in women’s only events .

Only 19 years

It was not until close to kilometer 20 that the very young Kiplimo, who gave Uganda the first gold in a World Half Marathon with 58:49 (championship record), was the winner. It was about two kilometers from the finish line when this very fast man on the track (this year he has done 7: 26.64 in 3,000) left alone and left a few meters behind the Kenyan Kibiwott Kandie, who arrived as leader of the year and scored 58: 54 on goal. They went from less to more and around kilometer 15 they already made the Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei suffer, who made his debut in the distance (he finished fourth with 59:21 behind the Ethiopian Amedework Walelegn) after recently breaking the world records of 5,000 and 10,000 meters in track.

10 athletes managed to get off the hour and there were no more and no less than 35 athletes in the top 50 improving their personal best, with twelve national records. By teams, a tight victory for Kenya over Ethiopia and Uganda, with Spain in a great eighth place thanks to the performance, above all, of Ayad Lamdassem (1:01:21, personal best and 31st position) and the brave ‘Chiqui’ Pérez (1:01: 39, position 36). The third man to join the Spanish team was Adel Mechaal (1h02: 30, 46th place). And in fourth place of the Spanish team came the Real Sociedad marathoner Iraitz Arrospide, which finished with 1h04: 07 in position 84, far from the time of 1h02: 56 achieved in 2019 in Valencia. He went through the 10th kilometer in 29:43; for the twentieth, on the other hand, at 1h00: 56. Jorge Blanco arrived in position 103 (1h05: 31).
