Horner: “Hulkenberg and Perez are willing to wait for Red Bull”

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes Sergio Perez and Nico Hülkenberg are willing to wait to take second place rather than sign with another F1 team too early. Horner has the upper hand in the drivers’ market, as he knows that Perez and Hülkenberg, who are in the race to join Red Bull in 2021 as partner Max Verstappen, would rather drive for the Austrian team than Haas, Williams or Alfa Romeo.

While there is a certain urgency to appoint Verstappen’s teammate, Horner has made it clear that Alex Albon is still the preferred choice, provided he does prove himself this weekend in Imola and possibly in Turkey.

Perez and Hulkenberg want to go to Red Bull

Within a few weeks Albon should have clarity about his future, but there are only two races left before Horner and Marko make a decision about Albon’s seat. Horner doesn’t feel like Perez or Hulkenberg are being captured by any other team.

“I think one of those drivers clearly has a preference for Red Bull. So I imagine they want to wait to see what Red Bull’s decision is.”

Not a convenient time Albon

Albon’s recent battle came at a particularly bad time, with Red Bull looking to determine its duo for 2021. Since his first podium at Mugello, the Thai-British driver has only scored one point in the last three races and time is running out to make sure he can keep his seat.

“The reality is that there aren’t that many races left in the season and it comes at a time of year when we have to think about next year. We will have to make a decision in a few weeks. We obviously know what all the options are. Horner added.
