Did you expect one of the attackers of Pilsen to go overboard?
I had no idea. If we managed to advance to the basic group of the European League, given the demanding program, it would not make sense to reduce the staff. In addition, at the beginning of the season I was the number one striker, then unfortunately my injuries slowed me down. Only after being knocked out of the cups did things start to move. The move to Belgium was helped by a number of coincidences, paradoxically the injury just mentioned.
How did the whole thing actually come together?
Terribly fast. I had no idea that I would leave Pilsen. The Nehoda Sport agency, which represents me, but was ahead. Three days in advance, they told me that there was a possibility of engagement in Zulte-Waregem. I didn’t take it so seriously at first. But then an official offer came and they told me: Tomík, you’re flying. Which was three hours before the league match with Olomouc. So I quickly packed up and went to Belgium.

Did you manage to say goodbye to your teammates?
I went around all the boys and coaches. I will miss them a lot, but I think Belgium is a career shift for me. Every footballer would like to try a foreign engagement. I’m so glad this came true for me now. My first impressions of Waregem are only the best. I didn’t expect it to be so great at the club.

Beautiful facilities, beautiful stadium, training camp nearby. Lots of playgrounds, huge opportunities for players. There is a hotel where players can relax at any time. They each have their own room. Every day, food is prepared for the team, a snack. Everything is here, from A to Z. I’m really glad that the club chose me. I will do my best to repay Waregem for her trust.
What are the goals of the club?
From what I’ve known, the team is very good. He has cup goals. Although they did not catch the start of the Belgian league, the seventh team can also play the European league here. Waregem has already played a group of this competition, so why couldn’t he repeat the success.
Did you consult your engagement in Belgium with your former teammate from Pilsen Michael Krmenčík, who works in Bruges?
I was even behind her. Bruges is close, less than an hour by car. We had lunch and dinner. It was also nice for Krmi to be able to talk to someone in Czech, he now has a family in the Czech Republic. So we had to order in English. Neither of us is a great linguist, but the staff at the restaurant understood us (laughs).
Did he give you any advice?
He told me what to prepare for in the Belgian league. That the trainings are in a completely different intensity, they go hard to fight. Nobody saves anyone. The Belgian league is physically demanding, running. We are in constant contact with me, I am now in Belgium without a family. I can’t wait for him to come to me.
