Despite loss of control during demo: Interior Senator criticizes Corona skeptics – but not the police – Berlin

Berlin’s Senator for the Interior, Andreas Geisel (SPD), and the police commented on the corona controls and events surrounding the demonstration by corona skeptics on Sunday – but not a word about the failure of the police. While the police checked compliance with the anti-corona rules such as distance and masks and around 50,000 people at the weekend, the demonstration of 2,000 corona skeptics and conspiracy ideologues from Alexanderplatz to Kino Kosmos got out of control.

Police officers were attacked, an officer was even bitten, journalists were threatened and the free and democratic basic order was despised. The police initially had too few officers on duty and were taken by surprise several times by the demonstrators. A head of operations said, according to “Spiegel”, when asked why the police did not act tougher against the massive violation of the mask requirement, that they “did not want to produce the pictures”. Domestic politicians of the red-red-green coalition said the operation raised questions.

The police’s balance sheet: 50 arrests, 650 emergency services, 64 criminal investigations for violations of the Assembly Act, breach of the peace, violence against law enforcement officers and attempted release of prisoners – as well as 71 reports of administrative offenses relating to the Corona Ordinance.

Geisel explained to the demo that rule breaking and violence were increasing. “We cannot accept that,” said Geisel. He was concerned about the arson attack on a building of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Tempelhof-Schöneberg on Sunday night. “If it turns out that the motive for the crime is in connection with the work of the RKI in the context of the corona pandemic, then the red line has been crossed here,” said Geisel. The RKI is centrally responsible for the fight against the corona pandemic. The flames could be extinguished quickly, the state security determined. A security guard saw several people in the act.

The police may also have made a mistake during the corona checks. On Saturday evening, she announced that she had broken up a “fetish party” in the Alte Münze in Mitte due to corona violations. The operators disagreed and declared that they had complied with the Corona regulations. “Our guests were treated as freaks and outlaws and humiliated by the police,” it said. The party was “certainly not to everyone’s taste – but legal,” said the club political spokesman for the Green parliamentary group, Georg Kössler. Health Senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD) called for consequences: “I am shocked that such parties still exist. Some didn’t hear the shot. “

AfD MP Jeanette Auricht caused outrage. On Sunday she was without a protective mask at the lateral thinking demonstration, on Monday she was on the health committee of the House of Representatives. That was “deliberately dangerous, irresponsible and actually just crazy,” said Catherina Pieroth (Greens). Sven Kohlmeier (SPD) said that Auricht’s participation in the demo was “disgusting”. Auricht defended himself: “I will not let anyone prevent me from exercising my right to freedom of demonstration.”
