When Reece Hodge landed a long-distance penalty on his own half with the clock already expired, almost no one would have expected the eight minutes of madness that followed when Bledisloe I finished at 16-16.
But the Australian fans were furious after Hodges kick hit the post, only the Wallabies received no penalty in the following seconds despite multiple seemingly clear violations by the All Blacks in front of their own post.

There was arguably an immediate kick-off when the hosts failed to pick the ball off the rebound, then a series of questionable violations of the jerk that were not blown off.
It was most evident when Ardie Savea of New Zealand came off the side of the rucksack, then got off his feet and was still playing on the ball. The referee was on the other side of the back and couldn’t see what had happened.
Then there were some hands on the jerk that Kiwi whistleblower Paul Williams missed again, resulting in revenue and robbing the Aussies of a possible win.
While Channel 10’s coverage of the game, former wallaby Matt Burke also blew Missed Offside, saying, “He’s got to be offside. I have to stand on the sidelines. Oh my goodness.
“This referee was terrible. I can’t believe Sam Whitelock was there. “
And at Fox Sports, former wallaby Justin Harrison called it “prison rules.”
Fans were furious with the referee on social media.

Aussies were robbed. 2 penalties 10m for offside. Not called and then NZ almost wins. The defense got up when we needed it #BledisloeCup

The officers were terrible in those last 10 minutes.
Too scared to make the big call.
There must have been about four penalties right outside the All Blacks post.#BledisloeCup– Dylan Jack (@dylanmattjack) October 11, 2020
I’ve used cricket as a referee in QLD so I’m generally the last one to criticize referee. But this was without a doubt the * worst * referee example I have seen in many years. If I hadn’t known better, the word “cheater” would come to mind #BledisloeCup #ausvnz
