The environment in Belarus still tense due to protests against the president Alexander Lukashenko, in power since 1994, after the presidential election on August 9, considered fraudulent by his detractors.

But the mobilizations in the eastern European country have also affected the sport, affecting one of the historical figures: the basketball player. Yelena Levchenko.

According to the portal 20 Minutes, the player was arrested for participating for the second time in a demonstration against the Lukashenko regime and was detained for 15 days in unsanitary conditions.

“They have endangered my health. They requisitioned my mattress and sheets. There is no hot water. They have not allowed me to shower for 13 days “, revealed the best center in the 2010 World Cup, after being released.

“They have blocked the toilet chain. This is a nest of bacteria. They didn’t take me out for a walk for five days. I have lice. All of this damages my health, ”added the WNBA finalist.

According to the aforementioned media, the charges against Levchenko were to be in two peaceful marches in Minsk, on August 23 and September 27.

However, his real ‘sin’ was to sign a petition to put an end to police violence, punish those responsible for the repression, release the detainees and political prisoners, and call a new presidential election.

“In the 21st century it is not possible to adopt these methods in the center of Europe”emphasized the basketball player.

Levchenko, 37, has been endorsed by several of his colleagues, although other basketball players have lamented that for fear of retaliation they have been unable to support the Belarusian sports legend.
