Badminton unites young people from the northern region in a tournament in Guadalix de la Sierra

The Luis García Berlanga Public Institute of Guadalix de la Sierra has just hosted the Friendship Tournament, a badminton competition that is part of its educational program as Instituto Deportivo, one of the novelties of the school year in the north of Madrid since it is the only public educational center in the area to have this specialization.

Around 180 students, from institutes in Soto del Real, Miraflores de la Sierra and Guadalix de la Sierra himself, attended this tournament in which the podiums were taken by students from Luis García Berlanga.

According to the person in charge of the Physical education area, Gabriel Villa, because his students are “in better physical shape due to having more hours of gymnastics than students from other centers.”

The tournament is part of the new program of activities of the Luis García Berlanga institute that is part of an educational program promoted by the Community of Madrid in order to increase the sports practice of students, transmit values and make sport more inclusive, other purposes.

Likewise, another objective is to help “students who wish to direct their careers to professions related to Sports, sports or healthy living.”

In any case, those responsible and the students of the center have made a positive balance of the four months that have elapsed as a Sports Institute. The main changes have been that students have four hours of Physical Education instead of the conventional two, to which more athletic students can add another two hours of the optional “Sports”. On the other hand, according to the director of the center, Pablo Palacios, “the increase in Physical Education hours is not done to the detriment of other subjects”.

Likewise, the coordinator of the IES Luis García Berlanga sports institute project, Gabriel Villa, has asked the Community of Madrid to take advantage of this initiative launched in September 2019, to expand the educational offer of the aforementioned center that teaches ESO but not Baccalaureate. The idea would be “to have Baccalaureate and a higher-level Tafad Vocational Training so that students who want to focus their professional future in the sports field can do it in Guadalix de la Sierra, and not have to go to other municipalities to continue this specialization” explains Villa.
