ATP tournament in Antwerp can receive 1,500 spectators per day

Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke (SP.A) announced on Friday at a press conference after the conciliation committee that the protocols with the sports sector will be reviewed in the coming week in order to adapt them to the current situation.

The European Open, the only Belgian tournament on the ATP tour, will, however, keep the number of 1,500 spectators per day thanks to some changes to the current protocol. “We’ll have to leave two seats instead of one between each bladder to keep a 1.5m safety margin. There will also have to be a number of empty seats between the occupied seats, “says Dick Norman.” The games also start earlier because of the curfew. The first games start at 12 noon instead of 2 p.m. so that the audience can get home on time. We are very happy that the tournament can take place. We have worked very hard to make sure security precautions are in place. “

Two players who tested positive had to withdraw from the European Open: Italian Fabio Fognini (ATP 16) and Ruben Bemelmans (ATP 219), whose cancellation was announced on Saturday. “Ruben took a test two days ago,” said Dick Norman. “The result is positive and therefore Ruben cannot take part in the tournament. It was a big surprise for Ruben, who regrets not being able to play. ”Zizou Bergs (ATP 528) inherited the place assigned to Bemelmans.

David Goffin (ATP 14) also recently tested positive. He still hopes to be at the tournament in Antwerp. The Belgian number one did a new test on Thursday. If the result is negative, he can start the second round on Thursday, as he is excluded from the first round due to his set status. (belga / mv)
