COLOGNE, Germany – Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime came from behind to snatch a 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) victory over Belarusian qualifier Egor Gerasimov on Wednesday in the second round of the Cologne Tennis Championship.

Auger-Aliassime, the fifth seed who got a second-round pass, broke Gerasimov when the world’s 87th racquet served for the game at 6-5 in the second set of this game presented on cement.

The 22nd-ranked tennis player in the world took part in the Cologne indoor tournament final last week.

He struggled with his second serve on Wednesday, getting just 51 percent of the points with it, and he preserved six of the 10 break points awarded to Gerasimov.

In the quarter-finals, Auger-Aliassime will face the winner of the match between the German Jan-Lennard Struff and the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka.

Meanwhile, favorite Alexander Zverev defeated Australian John Millman 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 in the second round.

Zverev committed 10 double faults, but kept his cool and scored his fifth consecutive victory in Cologne, after triumphing last week in the final against Auger-Aliassime.

These two back-to-back tournaments in Cologne have been added to the ATP calendar following the season hiatus caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Zverev will face eighth-seeded Adrian Mannarino in the quarterfinals, who ousted Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-3.

Moreover, Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina beat American Steve Johnson 7-6 (3), 6-3.

Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., Will cross swords with France’s Gilles Simon in the second round on Thursday.
