Yesterday was the first day of play in the group stage of the Europa League. And such an evening at the Europa League always delivers a lot of goodies. Check out these 10 videos and you’re all set.
Joker De Laet: “Refaelov should have scored 2”
Lior Refaelov was the Antwerp hero of the evening after the 1-2 victory at Loedogorets. Still, Ritchie De Laet criticized his teammate. Or was it a joke?
Arsenal goalkeeper Leno will sleep badly after this blunder
Arsenal started its European campaign, just like Antwerp, with a 1-2 win. In Vienna goalkeeper Leno was especially relieved, as his blunder led to Rapid Vienna’s 1-0. Although there was also a supporting role for – how could it be otherwise – David Luiz.
“New Cavani” boosts its market value with a hat trick
Who did have a nice evening, was Darwin Nunez, the Uruguayan striker of Benfica. The “new Cavani” was not yet able to score in the Portuguese league (already 5 assists), but was good for a hat-trick against Lech Poznan, his first goals in the shirt of Benfica. Jan Vertonghen entered the fourth place.
Former Club and STVV player steals the show with a goal from 30 meters
A goal less than Nunez, but Elton Acolatse was no less decisive for Hapoel Beer Sheva. The ex-player of STVV and Club Brugge gave his club the victory with 2 goals on the counter in the final phase. Especially the 3-1 was spectacular, he outwitted the goalkeeper from about 30 meters.
Kemar Roofe does even better than Acolatse: from his own half
“Thirty meters? I can do that better”, Kemar Roofe must have thought. The ex-Anderlecht striker scored the best goal of the evening with a lob from his own half in Standard-Rangers. “Jesus Christ”, said Peter Vandenbempt.
Tumult after Roofe’s goal: “Standard showed no class”
The goal and especially the provocative celebration of Kemar Roofe caused uproar on Sclessin. Rangers coach Steven Gerrard found the reaction from Standard’s camp inappropriate. “Standard is normally a club with class, but they didn’t show that at the end tonight.”
Cop’s clumsy missed control heralds Roofe’s goal
Duje Cop could have kept Roofe from claiming the spotlight. The Croatian substitute of Standard is all alone in the penalty area, but at his control he clumsily lets the ball slip under his foot. Half a minute later Roofe makes it 0-2.
Granada ruined Götze’s European debut at PSV
Mario Götze surprisingly moved to PSV and seemed to be the hero of the evening in Eindhoven with his first European goal in the PSV shirt. But Granada thought differently: with a ping-pong goal and a lovely curl in the top corner, the Spaniards took the three points home.
Villarreal and Sivasspor serve a goalscoring fair
There is no shortage of goals in the Europa League. Leverkusen, for example, beat Nice 6-2 and also in Villarreal-Sivasspor there were 8 goals: 5-3. Watch the Goals Fair here, served by Villarreal and Sivasspor.
Two wonderful goals to conclude: Alario and Yusuf Yazici
