Van der Breggen takes pink in Giro Rosa after second place in eighth stage

Anna van der Breggen has conquered the pink jersey in the eighth stage of the Giro Rosa. The Boels-Dolmans rider finished second behind the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini, but kept leader Katarzyna Niewiadoma well behind her.

The Polish was allowed to start in the pink jersey because Annemiek van Vleuten was unable to get on after her fall in the sixth stage, in which she suffered a broken wrist. Van der Breggen, winner of 2015 and 2017, saw her chance and wanted to “open the attack” today.

Backlog

Van der Breggen started the penultimate stage with 15 seconds behind Niewiadoma on the 91.5 km stage with two tough climbs. On the final climb there was a leading group of nine, containing all the top riders.

Borghini and Van der Breggen drove away from it in the final. Although Van der Breggen narrowly lost the final sprint, she is allowed to wear the pink leader’s jersey.

Tomorrow the riders will ride the last stage of the race, with start and finish in Motta Montecorvino.
