US Open golf: Dustin Johnson, the scarecrow

Second Grand Slam tournament of the year, the US Open will take place this Thursday on the West course of the Winged Foot GC, in Mamaroneck, near New York. Designed in 1923, this is an old-fashioned parkland that is very demanding at all levels. Long, marked out by trees, this par 70 of 6700m was prepared in the American style with narrow fairways and greens that are both fast and firm. It will be a terrible test as the players will have to show both power and precision. This is the fifth time that this championship course has hosted the US Open. In 1929, he crowned the legendary Bobby Jones, the only player in history to have succeeded in the Grand Slam.

The set of this 2020 edition, which will take place behind closed doors, is exceptional. With the exception of Brooks Koepka, injured, all the tenors are present. World number one and recent FedEx Cup winner, Dustin Johnson is a scarecrow. At 36, the Columbia giant has never seemed so solid in all areas of his game. He is quite logically the favorite of bookmakers ahead of Spaniard Jon Rahm and American Justin Thomas. But beware: danger can come from anywhere. Young dad (like Thomas Pieters), Rory McIlroy has ants in the swing. This is the kind of course that the Northern Irishman – who has not won a major since 2014 – loves. And the new US generation, led by Collin Morikawa (winner of the PGA Championship last month), Xander Sc Chaudele and Bryson DeChambeau does not intend to let it go. Tiger Woods will also be there. Very discreet for a year, the former world No. 1 is trying to gain strength in order to be ready to defend his title at the Masters, next November.
