Resident ends the rogue driving range

Frustrated with golf balls whizzing through the air and hitting the eight-unit complex he lives in, a resident decided to take action.

Joe Lewandowski searched the location on the college mesa where he suspected golf balls were being thrown over his home on O’Brien Drive, off Florida Road. He discovered a golf club and bag of golf balls on a track about 150 meters from the Hillcrest Golf Club parking lot.

“A golf ball flying from above can be lethal. It has a lot of gravity behind it. He could kill someone if he hit him in the head, “Lewandowski said.

He suspects the pranksters are having a good time, not realizing or worrying about the danger they were courting.

A window pane in the complex was smashed by a golf ball on Thursday night, and in the past few days golf balls have slammed into the sides of their homes.

“I deactivated the golf club and took the bag of golf balls, and left a note for whoever was doing it,” Lewandowski said.

He said he will hand over the club – a 7-wood King Cobra now broken into two pieces – and the bag of golf balls to the Durango Police Department to help with the investigation.

“We called the police, and they took a tour of where we suspected the golf balls were coming from, but something like this is pretty hard for them to deal with,” he said.
