Reaction and analysis on the initial list of 53 people

Throughout the offseason, it emerged that there was competition between veteran linemen Oday Aboushi and Kenny Wiggins for the same spot. Both have experience and some level of success as a first reserve guard, and both can play tackle in a pinch as well.

The debate between the veteran who would stay and perhaps the third man in the rotation of the guard turned out to be moot. Patricia cut them both and kept Matt Nelson unannounced instead.

Nelson appears to be the player most likely on the current 53-man roster to get pushed around by a waiver request, but for now he’s the 8th lineman. It is an upheaval that no one predicted.

Could this mean the end of the controversial guard rotation? It’s hard to imagine Nelson stealing regular season reps from starting guards Joe Dahl or Jonah Jackson. Rookie Logan Stenberg is the save center and likely won’t play guard as a result. That could change if another veteran is brought in, but Wiggins had the confidence of the coaching staff and they let him go in Nelson’s favor anyway.

It’s very interesting, said in the manner of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean voice…
