From La-Tour-du-Pin, a southbound turn is made around Grenoble towards Montée de Saint-Nizier-du-Moucherotte, the toughest climb of the day. At the top it is another 20 kilometers to the finish place Villard-de-Lans. The last 2 kilometers it goes up again. Tour boss Christian Prudhomme is back on track. He was in home quarantine for a week after a positive corona test.

Soon after the start there is a first slope, the Côte de Virieu of the fourth category. After the intermediate sprint (km 44.5), two cols of the second category follow north-east of Grenoble: the Col de Porte and the Côte de Revel. Then it goes up 11 kilometers in the Vercors nature park on the Moucherotte, classified in the first category. The final climb in Villars-de-Lans is called Côte 2000 where the finish is at an altitude of 1152 meters.

The Slovenian Primoz Roglic from Jumbo-Visma is the leader in the race. The stage is expected to end around 5.30 pm.

Preview of Boogerd:

“I don’t believe that big differences will be made in this sixteenth stage to Villard-de-Lans. The final is not very difficult and I think that the GC men want to save the energy for what is to come in those final stages.

In the beginning it will be war to form a group that will drive away. Once that has happened, it will be given space, especially from Jumbo-Visma. Tony Martin and Amund Jansen will then keep control and try to ensure that the leading group stays away, in order to avoid bonus seconds at the top of the Moucherotte and afterwards at the line.

The first three are rewarded in both cases. The first person on the top gets an eight count and at the line there are ten seconds left for the winner. Tadej Pogacar will be happy to take it to narrow his 40-second deficit to Primoz Roglic, only he has no team to control the ride. And Jumbo-Visma does not want another duel between the two to take place with the chance that Pogacar will take back time again. ”
