Previously, from 2014 to 2020, Laviolets led another NHL team, Nashville’s “Predators.” He has also previously led the Islanders of New York (2001-2003), the Hurricanes of Carolina (2003-2008) and the Flyers of Philadelphia (2009-2013).

“I am grateful and happy to be able to lead this team,” said Laviolets, who has become the 19th Capitals coach. “This is a winning team with high demands. I look forward to starting work at this club.”

In 2006, Laviolets became the fourth American coach to win the Stanley Cup. During his 18-year coaching career, Laviolets and his teams have played in the playoffs for 11 seasons. During this period he managed to win 75 victories, but in another 68 cases he failed.

Laviolet is only the fourth coach in the NHL to reach the Stanley Cup final with three different teams (2006 with Hurricanes, 2010 with Flyers and 2017 with Predators). Previously, Dick Irvin, Scotty Boomen and Mike Quinan have enabled it.

Laviolets has also gained international experience, leading the USA national team at the World Championships in 2004, 2005 and 2014. He participated twice in the Olympic Games during his career (in Calgary in 1988 and in Lillehammer in 1994), and in the coaching profession he participated in a four-year event in Turin in 2006 and in Sochi in 2014.

Laviolets started his coaching career in 1997, when he took the helm of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) team at Willing “Nailers”. He has also worked for the American Hockey League (AHL), but became the head coach of the NHL’s Islanders during the 2001/02 season.
