In addition to ABT Sportsline, Cupra announces participation in Extreme E.

Extreme E is a new off-road electric racing series and the first automaker to join it is Cupra, SEAT’s performance sub-brand. It won’t race alone, however, as it is actually the main partner of the Abt Sportsline team that will be participating in the inaugural edition of Extreme E scheduled for 2021.

Cupra’s contribution to the racing team is to create a team of engineers and drivers for this electric odyssey. ‘The company’s newly appointed Vice President Research and Development, Dr. Werner Tietz said

‘The Extreme E represents the attitude of the CUPRA challengers in the racing world and their ambition to discover new motorsport experiences. For this reason, the decision to be the first automobile manufacturer to take part in the competition and to strengthen our cooperation with ABT is proof of the shared vision of both partners to reinvent the world of high-performance cars through electrification. ‘

ABT Sportsline and Cupra have been working together since 2018 to jointly develop a more powerful version of the SEAT Leon Cupra and the Cupra Ateca, whose 2-liter turbo engine is designed for over 350 hp. Cupra also developed the world’s first BEV touring car while ABT participated and has experience in Formula E. So they go very well together to form an Extreme E-Team.

The other announcement in the same press release was that this joint team had signed a celebrity driver for next year’s season: Mattias Ekström, the Swedish racing driver best known for his participation in the German Touring Car Masters (DTM), from whom he resigned in 2018. He is accompanied by another (female) rider, as one of Extreme E’s goals is to have an “equal sports format”.

The vehicle itself is not built by Cupra or ABT. All vehicles scheduled to take part in the first season of Extreme E will be built by Spark Racing Technology in France. They have permanent all-wheel drive, 536 hp and a claimed sprint time from standstill to 100 km / h) of 4.5 seconds.
