Frenkie de Jong was predictably asked about Lionel Messi after the Netherlands’ 1-0 win against Poland on Friday in the Nations League.
The midfielder was understandably delighted to hear that the Barcelona captain changed his mind about leaving the club and would stay for the 2020-21 season.
“Yes! I read it. Personally I am very satisfied with it. He is the best player in the world. So if it stays, you are happy.
“I have not had contact with people from Barcelona. It became known quite late and we were preparing for the match, but I’m very happy with it.
“It was something between Messi and the club. I have no control over this and I wasn’t in Barcelona so it makes sense to follow him from afar. “

De Jong made another good performance on Friday for the national team. He played a role in the only goal of the match, scored by Steven Bergwijn, and also hit the post with a low shot.

It was Holland’s first game since Koeman’s departure for Barcelona. Interim coach Dwight Lodeweges will be back in charge for Monday’s next match against Italy.
