Amazon renews its NFL game broadcast agreement – Image

The Amazon conglomerate has renewed for several seasons and even expanded its agreement to broadcast NFL professional league football matches on its online video platform, according to a statement released Wednesday. The exact duration of this new appointment has not been communicated. The e-commerce giant, which is cautiously advancing its pawns in online video and live sports broadcasting, first won NFL rights in 2017.

It has since broadcast the Thursday night game for the past three seasons, which is also broadcast on traditional television by another broadcaster. The contract, worth $ 50 million for the first season, had already been renewed for the first time in 2018, for two additional seasons at $ 65 million each, according to several American media. From next season, Amazon will broadcast 11 Thursday matches per year, which will be available to subscribers to its Prime service, which the group figures at more than 150 million worldwide.

The meetings will be visible in more than 200 countries on the video platform of the online business group as well as on the video site Twitch, a subsidiary of Amazon, said the Californian giant and the NFL in a joint statement. These Thursday matches are not produced and filmed by Amazon but by Fox, which pays $ 660 million per year for the rights to its matches, or about ten times the amount currently spent by the Seattle conglomerate.

The new agreement provides that in addition to the Thursday matches, Amazon will broadcast, each season, a Saturday match, which was not the case until now, exclusively. By selling its rights at a modest price compared to that paid by traditional broadcasters, the NFL is opening up to a younger and more international audience. As for Amazon, it continues to advance in the field of broadcasting rights for sporting events. In addition to the NFL, the Seattle giant has acquired broadcasting rights for the Roland Garros, the US Open and Wimbledon tournaments in tennis, the Champions League (in Germany) and the English championship in football.
