“A true champion”: Novak Djokovic expresses admiration for Andy Murray at the US Open 2020

A few days ago Andy Murray took everyone back to years past when he made an unreal comeback from two sets less to win his first round tie at the 2020 US Open.

This is a significant achievement as Murray faced recurring hip injuries and also had to undergo career-threatening surgery. Now reacting to Murray’s match, Novak Djokovic has revealed his happiness after witnessing the return of the former world number 1

In his post-match press conference, he commented on Murray’s return and praised Murray’s efforts that made this return possible.

“I saw a little of his game. I was not surprised by his fighting spirit and the way he came back to win it because he has done it more than a few times in his career,“Djokovic said.

Novak Djokovic talks about Andy Murray’s return trip

Djokovic called Murray a “real fighter” and a “real champion”. And he hopes Murray continues this bull run.

“He is truly a champion. He has a big heart. He is a true fighter, a great example of someone who leaves everything on the pitch. Be very determined, especially after everything he’s been through over the past five years with his hip surgeries.

“A year and a half ago in Australia he probably said goodbye to tennis, then returned, winning last week against Zverev, who is a Top-10 player, winning a tournament in Belgium last year.

“I mean, it’s really impressive. I really, really hope that he can stay healthy and that he can go on like this for a long time. “ Djokovic said.

Djokovic will play Jan-Lennard Struff tomorrow in the third round. The world number 1 extended his 2020 unbeaten run to 25-0 after defeating Kyle Edmund in the 2nd round.

Andy Murray, on the other hand, will play Felix Auger Aliassime in the 2nd round today. This will be the first meeting between the two. The last time Murray went through the second leg of the round in a Grand Slam was in 2017, he will be looking to improve that disturbing record.
