In a blow to the US Open, Simona Halep, number 2 in the world, decided not to travel to the United States to participate in the Cincinnati Open and the US Open.
He released his statement on chirping. For several weeks there have been various indications of uncertainty from Halep about his participation in the US Open. And today he confirmed that he will not participate.

Like many others, Halep is reluctant to travel due to the pandemic. The United States is still in the throes of the pandemic and so it has decided to put its health first.
“After weighing all the factors involved and with the exceptional circumstances we are living in, I have decided that I will not go to New York to play the US Open.” Halep tweeted
Halep recognized the efforts made by the USTA and WTA to make the US Open a safer event. And he wishes his colleagues a successful and safe tournament.

Halep yesterday won the WTA Prague Open. The tournament was played on clay. So Halep might be thinking of a return to clay tournaments starting right after the US Open in Europe.
This causes the top two ranked players in the world to be absent from the US Open. A few weeks ago, Ash Barty, world number 1, also retired citing the trip to the United States as a risk.
The US Open women’s singles draw will now have only four players in the top 10. Karolina Pliskova will be ranked first in the world. The other three in the top 10 are Sofia Kenin and former Flushing Meadows champions Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka.
